Pattern info

'Sailing to Avalon' alludes to the childhood memories of my dear friend Nora, who spent summers with her extended family at this seaside town. A background bee stitch evokes the hive of activity, with children playing in the sand and water, adults enjoying sunshine and salt air, and everyone buzzing to and fro.

The border, a sinuous, syncopated pattern of cables, suggests both the ropes of small sailboats on the bay and the intertwining of those lives at a fondly remembered moment in time. We all have our own favorite such memories; perhaps you will think of yours as you knit the rich textures of this design.

The shawl has an asymmetrical shape with a built-in I-cord edge and is worked flat from the right tip to the left edge.

The pattern is fully written out with stitch counts and charted until the first repeat of adding the bee stitch to the shawl is done.
